Classic Blog Home Page or some other Layout

I was having coffee with a friend last week and we were discussing changing the layout of her homepage. She currently is using a blog layout and is considering a change to what I call a Magazine layout.

What is a Blog Layout?

A “blog” layout is what I have. When you land of my home page you see 3 of my current posts with page navigation. I could feature 5 or 10 or whatever. I am also using post excerpts as to keep the home page short.

What is a Magazine Layout?

I call it a magazine layout, but really it’s any layout other than a simple blog layout.

Which style should you use?

*Disclaimer* This answer will not apply to everyone

The main reason to have a magazine (or featured category) layout on your home page is to give you the ability to have more than just latest post on your home page.

When you have this style of layout you can make it easier to feature important content that maybe older than the last 3, 5, 10 posts but you still want it prominently portrayed on your home page.

Well what is the answer then?

If you have a personal blog and not too concerned with people seeing content on the home page from specific categories or older posts then use normal blog layout.

If you want more content featured on the home page then choose a layout that gives you lots of homepage feature areas to highlight more content.
