Full Custom GMC Motor Home with Duramax Diesel

Browsing around Craigslist and I find this AMAZING Bad Ass RV.

Custom Built, one off. Located in TEMECULA, CA 92591

One of the most expensive classic GMC projects ever undertaken (design and build costs coming in at over $200,000).

She was originally conceived to allow for a long term road trip of the USA and Canada with modern drive train reliability, all modern conveniences coupled with classic GMC Motorhome looks. She was designed and built out by Jim Bounds at the GMC co-op in Orlando Florida www.gmccoop.com

She started life as a 1976 Birchaven, the body was removed and custom modified to mount on top of a Workhorse LF bus chassis with 6.6 Duramax turbo diesel engine, Allison 5 speed transmission and FWD. Often described as a hybrid between a Motorhome, a private jet and a hot rod, she provides luxurious accommodation for two adults.

6.6 Duramax Diesel with approx 10k
Allison 5 Speed push button Transmission
19.5 ” Aluminum rims
Four new tires (approx 500 miles on them, less than 6 months old)
Remote control Ramco Mirrors
Zip Dee awning
Frameless Glass privacy windows
All wheel air ride with 2 new Viair compressors and new instrumentation dispays
ABS
OBD diagnostic system.
Tire pressure monitoring systems.
Rear back up camera
Kubota diesel generator with only 8 hours run time
Classic Auto Air street rod cooler AC for cockpit
Precision Twintemp Dual Heating System radiant heater/furnace,
TV/DVD/stereo system with 8 speakers.
LED interior lighting.
Norcold Refrigerator
2 Burner Verona Porcelain cooktop
Microwave
Dometic Push button toilet
She’ll cruise along at 75 all day and climb grades like they’re not there.

On an 1100 mile drive from Colorado to California she gave an average of 18mpg. She is registered in California as a ’76 GMC Motorhome with a diesel engine and therefore requires no smog in California.

She gets attention everywhere she goes so be ready to chat. There’s not much GMC Motorhome left in her but she really is the ultimate Hot Rod with plumbing.
$58,500

Sweet looking GMC Motorhome. I’ve always been interested in the GMC Motorhome. I find it more attractive than most motorhomes of the same vintage, except for the Travco and the FMC 2900R. I’ve always thought that the GMC Motorhome should’ve been available with a diesel engine while it was on the market. Call me naïve, but I would’ve thought that would’ve helped the RV industry during the gas crisis of the 70s.

Thanks, this wasn’t mine. I just found it for sale on Craigslist a couple years ago. I almost scored a nice FMC2900R last month but was too late for it.

Beautiful GMC and no idea you could put diesel in them.
    Is this still available?
Do you still do custom work on GMC‘s?

    • Loren Nason on September 21, 2020 at 1:43 pm

Dan, I didn’t do the work. This was a Craigslist Listing from 2017. Team @ http://www.gmccoop.com did the work. Previous commenter Norm said it was for sale in 2019. But don’t know if available now.

Norm Schaub is the current owner of this hotrod motorhome. Yes, he is interested in selling it. I am his mechanic, and put a new fuel filter block and primer system on it just last year. Norm can be contacted at his email [email protected]
