Teamsters are Afraid of Autonomous Trucking

My friend Roy and his partners were making plans to work on a Level 4 Transportation company. He sent me an email today that they are going to back off for a while because of this link that he sent me.

Level 4 Transport is:

This is what is meant by “fully autonomous.” Level 4 vehicles are “designed to perform all safety-critical driving functions and monitor roadway conditions for an entire trip.” However, it’s important to note that this is limited to the “operational design domain (ODD)” of the vehicle—meaning it does not cover every driving scenario.

Transportation Department doesn’t like Autonomous Trucks

Crony Unions (Teamsters) have done it again. They’ve influenced the gubmint to do things in their best interests and not the interests of all of us as a whole.

The U.S. House Energy and Committee on Thursday unanimously approved a bill that would hasten the use of self-driving cars without human controls and bar states from blocking autonomous vehicles. The measure only applies to vehicles under 10,000 pounds and not large commercial trucks.

The 1.4-million-member union, hoping to protect the jobs of truck drivers, has been lobbying at the federal and state levels to slow legislation to make it easier for companies to roll out self-driving trucks.

Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao has said she is “very concerned” about the impact of self-driving cars on U.S. jobs, a big part of President Donald Trump’s campaign message.

“It is vital that Congress ensure that any new technology is used to make transportation safer and more effective, not used to put workers at risk on the job or destroy livelihoods,” Teamsters President James P. Hoffa said in a statement, adding the union wants more changes in the House measure.

What a bunch of Crap

So the government will ban the testing of nation wide driverless trucks just because the Teamsters say it’s bad for jobs. James (Jimmy) P. Hoffa can take a flying leap of a short pier (white concrete boots). I despise unions.

Do they (teamsters) and others think this will actually slow the coming autonomous revolution of all. The only thing this does is force all development of Autonomous Vehicles to be done on smaller cars. You can do a lot of testing on smaller vans that weigh 9,999lbs and then take all that knowledge and catapult once the gubmint allows testing of 18 wheelers.

I don’t want to see people lose their jobs

But I would rather see the revolution of automated trucking/shipping/etc. My dad was a trucker and supported his family with it up until the late 80’s. A lot of good folk still drive truck and support their families. I hope the coming revolution will give them new opportunities directing their truck. Instead of driving it they will be telling it what to do.
